I would very much like this as well. I just purchased a few NFC tags (haven't arrived yet) and would love to be able to have SP recognize them as conditions rather than use another application.
Granted, his scenario isn't useful for everyone, but if it's a condition, you can use it in all sorts of scenarios.
Combine it with time and/or GPS/WiFi location and you can pretty much eliminate all problems that people would have.
Some people leave their phone on Airplane mode during the night (or when camping or something), so why not use the light sensor as a condition to turn airplane mode off.
There are tons of other possibilities that no one has thought of yet.
Well, you could expand things a bit then.
If the condition NEW_SIM_CARD is met, then ACTION: Turn the GPS on and send SMS message with the location of the phone.
One reason to have it built into this program rather than a standalone program is that SP isn't ONLY used for that. If someone searches the market (while looking through your apps on their brand new stolen phone) for "Wheres My Droid?", they'll delete it pretty damn quick!
Same with "Sim Checker Pro" (which I use) and "Remote Wipe (which I also use).
Settings Profile seems inconspicuous.
Just my $.02
I have my work schedule programmed into my calendar and have the condition based on the calendar rather than location.
So, when my scheduled worktime is done, the rule ends.
My work location is also pretty large, so I wouldn't want the rules turning on and off randomly, so calendar works better for me.
Maybe it will for you?

I have Dindy as well. I would settle for a way for Setting Profiles to be able to launch the Dindy profiles. Works great with Locale, but I'm trying to quit that program because it lags my phone after a while.
